Travis and Jamie

Travis Shumake

31, GENERAL MANAGER OF CITYSCAPE RESIDENCES, FOUNDER OF DOWNTOWN PHOENIX NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION, PHILANTHROPIST @TRAVISSHUMAKE

What is your dream date? An urban night on the town. Start with martinis at Durant’s, dinner at Blue Hound overlooking Central Avenue, then head to the Herberger for a show, and finish with a nightcap at Hanny’s.

What do you seek in a partner? Consistency and reliability. I’m all about loops and free-falls. I just need to know the ride is going to come to a safe and complete stop at the end.

Do you hope to get married one day? #tbd. A year ago, I would have told you I want a black- tie wedding at the Biltmore. My desire to be a father now supersedes my need for a traditional marriage.

Jaime Cerreta

39, KTVK CHANNEL 3 “GOOD MORNING ARIZONA” ANCHOR/REPORTER @CERRETANEWS

What is your dream date? I'm picturing two seats up against a big picture window. People are rushing by outside. Inside, we are sharing a cheese plate, and the conversation is flowing. A true connection and unbridled communication are two beautiful things.

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? I'm more of a baker than a cook so when I made a full-course meal for a boyfriend, he was in shock. He was so stunned I went through the effort, and I was so worried we'd get sick from the meal.

Who is your celebrity crush? Hmm...that Tim Tebow fella is pretty cute.

Darleen Rachit and Nora

Darleen Santore

40, FOUNDER OF COACH DAR WELLNESS AND LIFESTYLE REDESIGN @THECOACHDAR

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? I arranged to have all of his friends fly in for a surprise 30th birthday party. I had a special guest come, "the Godfather," to say a few words (he was from New York and I am Italian—I had to). It was hilarious. Then I got dressed up and came out to the party as Marilyn Monroe to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” as his last name was the name of a former president. It was a blast.

What can you offer a potential mate? The coolest best friend ever who will do lots of different things with him from going to sporting events, to watching them at home, to attending concerts, to hiking, to digging deep and having meaningful conversations, to dressing up and going out for a night on the town, to laying low and watching a movie. Point being, someone who is fun, flexible and passionate about doing life together.

Who is your celebrity crush? Jimmy Fallon because he's hilarious, can make everyone comfortable, can break out in rap and dance, and he's just great at what he does. Derek Jeter because he was top of his game, he led with integrity, he stayed below the radar on his personal life, and he gives back. Ryan Reynolds because he can be so funny, sweet but then can turn into a superhero and take charge.

Rachit Kumar

33, RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

@RACHITKUMARMD

Tell me about your day-to-day. Most of my daytime hours are spent at work from about 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., usually caring for my patients but also teaching medical students at the University of Arizona, performing research to improve our ability to fight cancer, and participating in local and national cancer-related committees. On the evenings and weekends, I like to stay active. I exercise, play sports and hike. I also love to travel and make it a habit to visit a new destination every year. Finally, I find time with friends and family invaluable, and I try to maximize these interactions, including recently joining a new book club which has led to many other life adventures.

What do you seek in a partner? A complex answer to a fairly short question: a person who loves my many faults, is not afraid to call me out, recognizes their own weaknesses and works to improve them, is driven to make both their own and others' lives better, and works to build strong relationships with people around them.

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? I planned a 24-hour trip to Rome that was supposed to be fairly simple. It turned into one of the strangest trips possible including escaping from angry Roman shop owners, trying (and almost failing) to find the entrance for a Vatican tour at the 11th hour, and navigating the most treacherous staircase we had ever seen in a sixth-century Catholic monastery while hauling luggage. Despite the craziness, it was incredibly romantic, fun and meaningful for both of us.

Nora Lındquist

28, DIRECTOR OF JET CARD SALES

@LADYBOSSLUXURY

Tell me about your day-to-day. I have been in the private jet industry for 10 years now so I spend a lot of time educating my clients and prospects on aviation so they can make the best decision for themselves and their companies. When I do have free time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, traveling and reading. I get out to Cali a lot to surf. I love being active and am outside as much as possible. I just bought a house, so I am working on that and I am always delving into something new, whether it be a business idea or a new hobby. I love to learn, check out new restaurants and go on fun adventures.

What can you offer a potential mate? My parents have been an excellent example of what love is. They have been married for 35 years now and are still going strong. I believe that love is not just an emotion but a choice, and it is not always easy. I am fiercely loyal, supportive, loving and caring. I want to be a part of a power couple and, therefore, will challenge and inspire my other half. I also welcome individuality and know that you need to have your separate time and hobbies as well. As much as I am independent, I am a nurturer at heart and love to make sure my mate is taken care of and is happy. I am lighthearted, passionate and love to laugh.

Who was your first love? My dad. He is my hero!

Erik and Bob

Erik Merkow

48, FOUNDER OF AZ FOOD & WINE, VP OF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT OF GOLDWATER INSTITUTE, VP OF MARKETING OF GIGI'S PLAYHOUSE @ERIKMERKOWPHOTO

Tell me about your day-to-day. I love to explore new places, restaurants, food and patios. I'm always looking for new dishes to cover for azfoodandwine.com. I love to cook, especially for someone who likes to be in the kitchen (my sous chef) listening to music and refilling our glasses. I typically run four miles a day. If there's a beautiful sunset happening, you most likely will find me pulled over on the side of the road capturing it (same for a great lightning storm, but I tend to chase those).

What do you seek in a partner? Looking for a beautiful smile, big heart and partner in remedial crimes to share a glass of wine with at the end of every day. Someone who's active, loves experiencing new foods, wine and drinks. Someone who is honest and loving and wants to give as much as she wants to be spoiled. I want to find someone who knows what true love is and is looking for their best friend and the one they can't keep their hands off of. The person who's on the other side of the door that gives you butterflies when you first meet...and 30 years later.

What can you offer a potential mate? I'm a fun, loving, kind, adventurous, wannabe chef, passionate, respectful, car-door-opener, flower- deliverer, wine-drinker, concert-goer, runner, Cards fan, photographer, entrepreneur, fun, laid-back, beach-lover, Californian, shopper, dad, best friend, provider, foodie, kisser and lover. So, a world filled with fun, happiness, passion and an abundance of love.

Bob Stump

44, CHAIR OF PHOENIX OPERA, COMMISSIONER OF ARIZONA CORPORATION COMMISSION @BOBSTUMP

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? Flying to Shanghai on relatively short notice to have a great Shanghainese dinner and watch the sun set over the Huangpu River from the highest building in China.

What can you offer a potential mate? Financial and emotional stability; a partnership based on humor and love and tolerance for our mutual imperfections; and a devotion to making her dreams—career or otherwise—a reality. Also, I can fix the roof.

Who is your celebrity crush? Former Metropolitan Opera soprano Lei Xu. I saw her perform as a "flower maiden" at the Met. What an artist.

Cyndie Kelley and Harper

Cyndie Turtoro Verity

55, CREATIVE PRODUCER/MULTIMEDIA ARTIST @CYNDIEVERITY

What is your dream date? A dream date is just that. It can’t be planned or purchased, no amount of money or means can create it. It’s the unexplainable magic that happens between two people. It’s when you look forward to it all day with anticipation and realize halfway through that you lost all sense of time and space. And suddenly you realize you don’t ever want to be anywhere else in the world.

What can you offer a potential mate? Wardrobe? A sense of humor, a positive outlook and independence of thought, not life.

Who was your first love? My children. My daughter would be the first, followed by her brother.

Kelley Primc

28, MARKETING COORDINATOR FOR CAPITAL MARKETS, BMX RACER @_KELLEYSLIFE

Tell me about your day-to-day. During the weekdays I'm extremely busy creating and designing materials for my awesome job. If I'm not at my desk it’s because I'm running around town uncovering all the amazing amenities Phoenix has to offer. After work, I like to unwind and have a glass of wine at any local hot spot or go ride my favorite BMX track to end the day. I like to spend time with friends and family, travel as much as possible, drink good coffee and delicious drinks, online shop and do anything competitive.

What can you offer a potential mate? I can offer a lot of love, laughs and adventure. Even though I have to be tough for my BMX racing, I'm really all about putting others before myself. It's important to me that people around me are having as much fun as I am.

Do you hope to get married one day? Definitely! I've been fortunate enough to travel and experience a lot, and I can't wait to share that with someone for the rest of my life. So one day when we can't travel or shut down the local bar, we'll have plenty to laugh about.

Harper Babin

26, MEDIA HOST, LULULEMON ATHLETICA KEY LEADER @HARPERBABIN

What is your dream date? My dream date—that's tough! What I do know is I'd love for the guy to take total charge and plan a date from start to finish. Taking the time to put such genuine thought into something for me is enough. A bonus would be if he picked out an outfit for me to wear for the date; I've always thought that'd be such a fun, flirty surprise! Nice touch to set the excitement for the date ahead.

What do you seek in a partner? As cliché as it sounds, a best friend for life. I want the fun person I can travel with and go out with our friends, but I also want that person who I can trust, lean on and ultimately support one another 100 percent in our daily life decisions. Oh, and he's got to be a true gentlemen.

Who is your celebrity crush? It's always been a tie between Justin Timberlake and Derek Jeter.

Chris Steve ShannonC copy

Chris Thompson

OWNER/DESIGNATED BROKER OF ONSITE REALTY

What do you seek in a partner? Fun. That's really my only criteria. I want to have fun with no drama.

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? That's a tough one to narrow down. I'm actually a pretty romantic person. I think doing little things every day is more important than just one big blowout.

What can you offer a potential mate? See previous question. I'm a good Midwest kid, hardworking, honest, and I'm not your typical Old Town douchebag. Can I say that word?

Steve Hanson

43, ENTREPRENEUR, GLOBAL HEALTH & WELLNESS INFLUENCER, ARTS ADVOCATE @STEVE_HANSON3

What is your dream date? My dream date would combine the things I love: travel, art, music and food. The date should be thoughtful but also allow for spontaneity. Maybe we could pick three cities to put into a hat and then draw the one where we will go.

What do you seek in a partner? Honesty. Confidence. Dedication. The ability to be honest, direct and open with your thoughts and feelings. Being confident with style and substance. An unrelenting dedication for never giving up on each other.

Do you hope to get married one day? Absolutely. There's nothing better than being devoted to your best friend and lover. It is the ultimate.

Shannon Campbell

45, WARDROBE STYLIST, FASHION EDITOR, PERSONAL SHOPPER, TV PERSONALITY, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

@SHANNONSTYLIST

Tell me about your day-to-day. I have a full- time job as an executive assistant to a busy CEO at a pharmaceutical company (PruGen Pharmaceuticals). When I’m not doing that, you can see me doing occasional fashion segments on Fox 10 News, talking about the latest fashion trends, etc. Or I am running around town pulling clothing for the next magazine I am styling. Also, I’m picking my son up at school. And maybe planning a big fashion show. Definitely very busy, but so blessed because I get to do so many things I love. I wouldn’t want it any other way! I love to spend time with my son and friends. I love the occasional happy hour libation. And weekend getaways. I love riding my bike in the park.

What can you offer a potential mate? I am very independent and successful. I am a little more seasoned due my age, so have a lot of life lessons under my belt. People say I’m really funny and I probably have one of the biggest hearts out there. Very caring, affectionate, and loyal.

Who was your first love? That would have to be my dad. I have always been a daddy’s girl. Sadly, he just passed away in December. He was my best friend, and I'm still dealing with the realization that he is gone. Anyone I meet has tough shoes to fill. He was an amazing man.

Dan Michael

Dan Bowman

38, PROJECT MANAGER AT DREWETT WORKS, PARTNER AT ACTIVE MEDIA SOLUTIONS, PRESIDENT OF SCOTTSDALE LEAGUE FOR THE ARTS @THEDANBOWMAN

What is your dream date? I would have to say my dream date would be a fun private island adventure. Do some exploring, take a boat ride back to an amazing restaurant on the beach where after dinner we would grab a bottle of wine and sit in the sand watching the ocean waves come in. Having the right person there with me is what would truly make it a dream.

What do you seek in a partner? I really like someone who is educated, driven, compassionate and funny. Most of all, I am always drawn to someone who is passionate about learning, passionate about giving, passionate about family, passionate about anything. When someone is passionate, they give so much of themselves, and it really shows me what matters most to them.

What can you offer a potential mate? I am intelligent, driven and have a wicked sense of humor. I have always been a giving and supportive person. Once I am in a relationship, I give everything of myself to that person. I have always had the desire to create a life with someone in the manner that works well for both of us. There is something to be said about creating the life you want.

Michael Banovac

26, MANAGING PARTNER OF RMB LUXURY REAL ESTATE, INTERNET ENTREPRENEUR @MILLDATEDOCTOR

What is your dream date? My dream date would be more like a dream trip, so it probably wouldn't be the first or second date. I love Southern France and Italy. One of my favorite romantic spots would be drinks at Chateau Eza in Eze, France, as the sun begins to set. There is a table on their private patio that cascades over the Mediterranean 1,300 feet above the sea that will take anyone's breath away.

What can you offer a potential mate? Fun! I am so focused on success during much of the week that when I am with someone I care about, I love the escapism of food, laughter, passion and travel.

Do you hope to get married one day? If the right person came along, I would seriously think about it. Marriage is such an important commitment that I think people treat it so trivially these days. I am certainly in no rush by any means, but I love the idea of respecting, loving and growing old with someone.

Kim ShannonB Darcy

Kım Quintero

31, TV METEOROLOGIST ON “GOOD MORNING ARIZONA,” “GOOD EVENING ARIZONA” AND 3TV NEWS AT 9P @KIMQUINTERO

What is your dream date? A hike in Sedona or Grand Canyon, followed by relaxing at a spa, then dinner and wine alfresco...with maybe an outdoor concert under the stars.

What do you seek in a partner? A sense of humor is a must. Honesty, willingness to be physically active with me, able to communicate what's on his mind, driven and goal-oriented, easy-going, able to make and follow through with plans, someone who's affectionate, thoughtful and kind. He also should take care of himself physically and mentally. I'm a very independent person, but I want a man in my life who will still look out for me. I'd like to think I'm able to offer all those traits in return.

Who is your celebrity crush? Jimmy Fallon for tall, dark and funny. Cristiano Ronaldo for tall, dark and athletic. Hugh Jackman because he gets even better with age.

Shannon Beaver

27, PRODUCER OF THE JOHNJAY AND RICH MORNING SHOW @SEBEAVER

What is your dream date? I like casual dates. Meeting someone for happy hour and having a few drinks is ideal. Honestly, the dream date to me would be having a great connection with someone. I could stay on a date for hours as long as there is great conversation.

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? I planned a trip to a winery for an anniversary. It was nice. We stayed in Cottonwood and drank great wine.

Who is your celebrity crush? Joseph Gordon- Levitt. He's a major babe who can act and sing. Love him!

Darcy Olsen

44, CEO OF GOLDWATER INSTITUTE @DARCYOLSEN

Tell me about your day-to-day. Most mornings start when the moon is up with a run on the canal or yoga and are non-stop until my little ones (ages 4, 3 1⁄2 and 2) fall asleep. On any given day, I move between strategic leadership and public appearances at work to finger painting, gardening and dancing with the kids at home. Elton John is my go-to mood lifter, and my latest obsession was The Last Viking.

What do you seek in a partner? I’m looking for the kind of person I’m raising my children to be: trustworthy, helpful, friendly, self-reliant, mentally alert and physically strong.

What can you offer a potential mate? You won’t have any pressure to have children because I already went out and got three of them.

Bo Jason

Bo Robert Patrick

30, OWNER/AUCTIONEER AT FIDELITY STATE SERVICES, LLC

What do you seek in a partner? Confidence, manners, style, educated and someone who enjoys being noticed. I love crowds, events and people, so I have always wanted to be with someone that stands beside me, not behind me. I want the confident gal who likes to go out and have a good time but is still a great woman and wants to have a family as well.

What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for a partner? I was dating a gal from Northern Arizona University, and I told her to drive down to Phoenix. Being a gentleman, I booked her a hotel (for herself). When she arrived, there was a wrapped pair of cowgirl boots in her room, and I told her what time to be ready. I picked her up and took her to the last George Strait concert. We went country dancing after, and I dropped her back at her hotel that night.

What can you offer a potential mate? Honesty, trust, confidence and always something new! I have worked very hard to get where I am so I have a nest to live a good life and experience new things with a woman, though I am not looking for someone that just wants to be a kept woman.

Jason Sani

30, NUTRITIONIST/OWNER OF ACTIVE MIND & BODY @JASONSANI

Tell me about your day-to-day. I get to do the things that I love all day: playing with food and helping people enhance their health and energy. My days bring me variety from working with clients and computer logistics with a lot of work around food. In my free time, I'm trying to escape the digital world by getting outdoors and challenging myself physically and mentally. Usually music is involved; whether it's dancing, live music, cooking or chilling out in a yoga class.

What can you offer a potential mate? Good cooking, never-ending smiles, nasty dance skills and stimulating conversation are just the tip of the iceberg.

Who was your first love? College relationship. Surprisingly, we met at a bar. So there is hope.

Country Superstar Terri Clark Talks Music with AFM

TC Cover Shot 20141

by Kelly Potts

Terri Clark was a driving force in country music in the late 90’s and early 00’s. With chart topping hits like “Girls Lie Too” “Easy on the Eyes” and “Everytime I Cry” Clark was all over country radio.

Coming off her recent album, “Some Songs”,  we had a chance to catch up with the star in anticipation of her free show 8 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa.

AFM: Thanks for taking time this morning to chat with me. I am excited for your show at Harrah’s Ak-Chin. How does it feel to be on the west coast for a few shows?

Terri: It’s great – I love to get in a few rounds of golf before my shows, and this is the perfect weather to do so!

AFM: What was your inspiration growing up to get into country music?

Terri: I grew up in a musical family, and just always listened to Reba, Ricky Skaggs and The Judds. So after I graduated high school, I moved down to Nashville. And the rest, as they say, is history.

AFM: What is your favorite song to play live?

Terri: All of them! I can’t pick a favorite – its like picking your favorite kid.

AFM: Do you have any artists that you would love to work with?

Terri: Hands down Jason Isbell or Chris Stapleton. I love the work they put out. Even if I didn’t get the chance to collab with them, just being on the bill with them would be more than enough for me! They are great.

AFM: What is the greatest part about traveling around to play shows night after night?

Terri: The fans. They keep me going and have kept me working for so long. I have fans that travel from place to place to see me, or come from other states to see me. That’s really cool. And, I like that I am doing enough to keep them coming back. I always want to leave my fans with the thoughts of ‘I will see her again’, and I try to not make them the exact same shows.

AFM: How has social media changed your music and fan base?

Terri: It has only made it better – honestly.  There is so much more interaction now, and you can get immediate feedback. I have a fan in New Zealand who has never been to a show, but she is a huge fan. Social media allows her to keep in touch, hear the new songs, see the videos, etc. That’s a really cool feeling. I have captivated someone who has never seen me live, and gives me a reason to try and go over there!

NATALIE GRANCHAROV CAMACHO, Process Engineering Manager at Intel Corporation, Marketing/New Player Director at Arizona Polo Club – Polo Cares Inc, and Co-Founder of Lila Polo and Mujeres Divinas Polo

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

It's amazing! Not just to be recognized for this but to be amongst such great female leaders in our community, I see this as an opportunity to meet new women with great talents from di erent spheres of business and hopefully learn from them...and maybe get them to try polo! It's meant so much to me to be able to share my passion for polo to others, especially young women. Women are making moves in the technology industry and the polo field.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR POLO STEM FROM?

My passion for polo comes from my love of horses and my competitive spirit. Horses are some of the most amazing animals, to be able to control a 1,000-lb. horse, racing down the field at close to 30 mph hitting a ball is such a rush of emotion. I love to think intensely and solve problems which is why I love my day work at Intel solving technical problems, and it complements well with my polo passion. I am lucky enough to have married a businessman and a polo player who comes from generations of polo, to be able to share this passion with him makes it even more fun. Most people don’t realize that polo is one of the few sports that women and men can truly compete on an even playing field. The top matches for polo in the world can be played by anyone who can keep up, regardless if you are male or female.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME?

Successfully transferring a high-volume manufacturing technology at Intel that is the most complex in the world. This was a huge challenge for myself and my team, but we did it and look back proudly on the work we did. (I could tell you more but it’s top secret!)

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

Horse rescue associations such as Arizona Equine Rescue and Off Track Thoroughbred rescues. I always wish I could do more to help horses that are neglected, rescued or in need of more care. I have started a yearly polo tournament to benefit horse rescues, and I will continue to work hard at it to lend support to these great organizations. Horses have been such an integral part of human history. We owe them a lot more than we give them, and they are so therapeutic to us. My husband and I have picked up many ex-race horses from the track, and they have become excellent polo horses.

NAME A WOMAN WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE.

Stephanie, my sister, has been the greatest influence on me. She is the head of strategy at one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Stephanie has proven that you can be a successful woman and still have a sense of humor and a big heart. I guess that credit is really due to our mother who encouraged us to be tough but always laugh, be kind and respect others.

ALI MATTHEWS RADOW, Chief Creative Officer of 224 Apparel

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

These women are the movers and shakers. They have the determination, the discipline, and the pure perseverance to make a difference. A Woman Who Moves the Valley is inspired to inspire others. She celebrates life. I'm grateful for the women in my life that inspire me, and it’s an honor to be considered among this group.

HOW DID THE 224 APPAREL COME TO BE?

As a little girl, I knew that creativity made me happy. Art made me feel alive. I also knew I'd be doing my own thing. While attending Arizona State University, I joined my sorority. I wanted to wear my Greek letters with pride every day. I searched high and low for cute and fashionable items. The Greek apparel industry was in need of a serious overhaul. At the time, mostly men were selling clothes to these young women—this didn’t make sense to me. As graduation grew near in 2008, it clicked. This demographic desperately needed a female presence, along with a sense of style. And it wasn’t just Greek life that craved fashion-forward custom apparel. I wanted to create items that I’d be excited to wear myself. I’m so fortunate to have a creative and supportive team. We’re a force together; their energy is contagious. Our loyal and supportive followers across the country have allowed us the unique luxury of growing our business on a referral basis. We’re grateful to be appreciated for what we love to do.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT?

Working with each campus is a privilege, which stems from our very first clients at ASU. My alma mater is where this all began for me. While staying true to our roots of clients based upon referral, working with each of the sororities at ASU was huge for us. We were so pleased when they came to us. By March of last year, we reached our goal. Knowing they chose to put their trust in our hands is an honor.

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

My family. My mom and dad encouraged me to challenge myself. They’re my role models, leading by example. Creativity and entrepreneurship run in the family and led me to pursue my own passions.

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

For the past six years, we’ve been honored to participate in the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund, which benefits children.

WHAT IS ONE WISH YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?

We hope to continue providing clothing that enhances a woman’s self-esteem. When our clients tell us how happy they feel, we’re overjoyed.

KATE WELLS, CEO of Children’s Museum of Phoenix

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE THE CEO OF CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX?

I have been fortunate to be involved with the Children's Museum since its inception as one of the founding members. I helped raise the funds (and friends) to get the museum open, and then returned as the CEO in 2013.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT?

Standing on the front steps of the beautiful, historic Monroe School as the ribbons were cut to celebrate the opening of the museum will forever be one of my professional highlights. The honor and privilege of helping to create a community treasure doesn't happen very often!

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

Three things really—I say yes to opportunities that are put in front of me, I can slog away at huge, messy projects longer than anybody I know (often when others give up), and I show up every day with passion and a willingness to give it my all.

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

I am passionate about causes that raise the tide for all women. I very firmly believe that when there is equality in the home, the workplace, in our government, and in our boardrooms, the result will be better education, health, prosperity and happiness for everyone. Obviously the Children's Museum is the cause nearest and dearest to my heart, but I also just finished my 13th year of being a Girl Scout leader helping empower the next generation of women.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A MOM WITH YOUR CAREER?

There really isn't a balance; I see both as important, but my role as mom takes precedent over work. That being said, I think having a dynamic career brings richness to my life that makes me a better mom, and my amazing daughters teach me new things—opening my heart and mind every day—that make me a better business person.

NAME A WOMAN WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE.

My mom, Eileen Bell. As a single mom raising two highly spirited daughters, she seized every opportunity that came her way to better our lives, going from a newly divorced stay-at-home mom to an executive for a Fortune 500 company. She wakes up every day with an amazing positive attitude and a zest for life.

MOLLY STOCKLEY, Vice President of Hospital Growth at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA)

TWITTER: @mgstockley

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

It means that I have a larger responsibility in the Valley to make sure that I strive to open the doors to future generations and a need to continue to visualize how to make our community a better place to live and develop. I feel that being a mom ‘mover’ provides a unique perspective that allows me to look at our community like I look at my own family. A mom aspires to provide opportunity, vision and security for her children. My mission is to initiate and foster those same ideals for the benefit of the Valley.

HOW DID THE HEALTH REALM COME TO BE YOUR CAREER PATH?

I am originally from New Iberia, La., and have 24 years in broadcasting, marketing, branding and advertising, working in television in Louisiana, Oklahoma City, Seattle and Portland and with the Anaheim Angels, finding my way to Phoenix at KTVK Channel 3. While at Channel 3, one of my co-workers and closest friends, Kristi, was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, with metastases that spread to her brain. I stood by my friend during the treatment process and was heartbroken at how difficult cancer is on a patient. Kristi battled but eventually succumbed to the disease at the age of 28. I could not shake the reality of how she struggled through the inhumane treatment process. In a stroke of fate, I was asked to cover an event, representing Channel 3, announcing the new Cancer Treatment Centers of America being built in Goodyear. I was overwhelmed by the message that CTCA’s CEO presented. I learned that CTCA is a place that the doctors work for the patients and focuses on eliminating all of the collateral hardships that Kristi had just endured. CTCA’s Mother’s Standard of care states that every stakeholder treats the patient as they would treat their own mother. In that moment, I had a new career path and a mission where I could use my passion, skills and expertise to help those in need.

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

My sheer drive and passion for our mission and truly helping those in need. It is my duty to communicate and endorse CTCA to those who need whole-body cancer care, who are fighting to live. When I meet patients, I see Kristi. I see her big blue eyes and her gorgeous smile. I know that she is proud of the work that I do.

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

Kristi Cares, The Kristina A. Stockley Melanoma Foundation, in honor and spirit of Kristi, is a nonprofit organization which strives to educate Arizonans about the dangers of skin cancer and the importance of sunscreen usage. The organization provides SPF 30 sunscreen dispensers at over 35 locations in the Valley, including spring training facilities, elementary and high schools, community events and, along with CTCA, provided 100-plus dispensers to the over one million attendees that attended the 2015 Arizona Super Bowl festivities. According to an article about innovative ideas from the 2015 Super Bowl, the sunscreen dispensers were named one of the top 10 best ideas from the Super Bowl. You can also find the sunscreen dispensers at the Arizona Cardinals football games as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks [games].

HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A MOM WITH YOUR CAREER?

Being a mom is the most important responsibility and privilege that I have in life. I balance by making family the priority. The best part of my day is taking my son, Jackson, 4, to school every morning and playing with trains at night with my 2-year-old, Jacob. My husband and I are unwavering in our dedication to family and work to create time to spend at home with our children. We strive to sit down at the table each night for dinner. A daily recap through the eyes of a 2- and 4-year-old provides a unique perspective that brings everything into focus. As they say, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ We incorporate a team strategy to foster the most loving and supportive environment possible. Making sure to not lose myself and my career in the process. Like my car license plate says, VP MOM. My favorite titles.

STANNA MICHELLE SLATER, Owner/Founder of The Law Office of Jeffery S. Slater, P.C.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

Receiving this recognition as a transgender woman means to me that the hard work of others who preceded me in Arizona’s transgender movement finally has begun to visibly manifest. I view myself as a fortunate beneficiary of the sacrifices made by others who pioneered our movement. I hope that this recognition will encourage other transgender Arizonans to pursue their goals and dreams with more confidence.

HOW DID LAW COME TO BE YOUR CAREER PATH?

Every aspect of my life, and particularly my career, has been the result of discovery. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a professional musician but in high school, discovered that my true calling wouldn’t manifest without higher education. In college, I discovered two career paths were particularly appealing to me: serving my country in the Army Reserve and practicing law as a civil advocate. I’ve been fortunate to pursue both of these callings but have discovered civil advocacy to be my passion––for more than 26 years now.As a transgender woman and supporter of the LGBT community, what impact do you hope to have on the way the Valley views diversity?I hope that my gender identity and efforts will eventually lead to statewide legal reforms that end discrimination against those who identify as gay or transgender. I’m always striving to promote education and public awareness about the struggles of those who are gay or transgender. We all may have gay and transgender people in our lives, as our friends, neighbors, co-workers and even family members. Studies have shown that 73 percent of Arizonans believe our laws are fully inclusive. However, the reality is that people who are gay or transgender can be fired, denied housing and denied public accommodations. They should be treated like anyone else and not be discriminated against.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT?

I will always remain proud to have served my country as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve. The experience of serving my country has taught me to defend those whose rights and freedom may be being threatened. This led me to my passion for civil advocacy, and I’m proud to say that my work on behalf of those who are gay or transgender recently yielded recognition in Scottsdale in the form of a 2016 MLK Diversity Champion Award.

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

The Valley cause that’s most dear to me is one•n•ten. This is because it empowers the Valley’s gay and transgender youth, many of whom have suffered from bullying and homelessness. I’ve had the chance to meet and help many of these youth, and I’ve found comfort in being able to help inspire some of them to begin pursuing their full potential.

LINDA SEARLES, Founder/Executive Director of Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWCC)

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

While it is an honor to be recognized, it is not just about me. If it were not for all the people who have donated their time, money and knowledge, SWCC would never have been the success that it is today. I thank them all for believing in me and the cause.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT?

SWCC becoming a member of the endangered Mexican Wolf Species Survival Program. SWCC is a holding facility for United States Fish and Wildlife Service, holding and caring for this endangered species. We also collect genetic material to be used for future breeding.

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

My mentors and friends and a lot of stubbornness. Growing up on the ranch, our horse vet, Richard Hancock, was a great inspiration and mentor to me. He taught me how to read animals, the subtle signs that most people miss. He also taught me a lot about veterinary medicine and how to work under difficult conditions yet still give the best possible medical care. I will forever be grateful to him for his time and the knowledge he instilled in me. Because of his kindness and willingness to pass on his wisdom, I feel obligated to do the same. Now it is my duty to mentor the next generation to pass on the knowledge they gave me. Some of my best learning came from experiences that cannot happen in a classroom or out of a book. With the SWCC veterinary and biology internship program, we do just that: give them hands-on personal experiences alongside experienced professionals. A place where the animals become the teachers.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME?

Funding, resources and lack of knowledge about wildlife. In the beginning, it was hard to find information on diets, formulas, nutritional needs, medications and treatments for wild animals. Networking with others around the country sharing experiences and medical cases has helped all of us to do a better job of rehabilitating wildlife.

WHAT IS ONE WISH YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?

That SWCC will always be there for injured and orphaned wildlife and a place to teach and inspire future generations to save wildlife. That no wild animal dies on the side of the road or suffers because there was no place for them to get help. A place where our next generation of wildlife stewards can be mentored. We all share a planet with finite resources that are dwindling. I believe that we must educate people to understand wildlife and, once they do, they will care and help to protect our wildlife and the world that we share. We all share the same planet.

PAT BONDURANT, President of the Bondurant Racing School, Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

It is a real wow moment for me. When I think about the life and times of Pat Bondurant in this Valley, I guess you could say I do move throughout the Valley full throttle. My husband Bob is great about sharing me between our Racing School, family, charity work, volunteering and the way I make a sincere effort to embrace our community with all my heart. This valley means more to me than anywhere I have ever lived in my life.

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

My mother forgot to give me the memo that there was a glass ceiling for women; she was the second highest ranked woman as a civilian in the military with the US Army Missile Command. Then she managed to give birth to me in the middle of five brothers who said either keep up or we are leaving you behind. That was a pretty effective driving force. I remember being 19; I was a runway model featured in six Ford commercials, and my first real job was being a draftsman at Teledyne Brown Engineering on NASA’s first space shuttle, the Enterprise. Not one brother around the Thanksgiving table made one remark about my modeling success or my NASA job. Their silence was a lesson in humility. They were all very successful. You never wait to hear praise from anyone; just do what you do, and be the judge of your own success.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME?

Being a single mom with two kids and zero child support from either father. There was never the problem with being able to advance at work based on my abilities; the obstacle was to juggle daycare, sick kids, school plays, sports events, company flights, late meetings, overtime, deadlines. I was usually the only woman at the management levels, never revealing the levels of stress of having to juggle being the mother and the father to two kids nine years apart. Once again, using what my brothers taught me, if you cannot keep up, you will be left behind.

WHAT VALLEY CAUSE IS THE NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOU?

Childhelp. It is the nation’s oldest and largest advocacy for abused and neglected children. My son’s father was a very violent person who was abused as a child and became an abuser. Fortunately, my son did not follow the pattern. My husband and I have visited the two Childhelp villages on each coast. It was a game-changer for us to see how much dedication the founders put into the incredible national success of the organization. It is not just a little local chapter; it is in every state. Phoenix is the headquarters. It is very important that I give up my spare minutes to help defend children and animals. They have no voice, and they have no choice of how they are treated.

NAME A WOMAN WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE.

Sara Fedderson, founder of Childhelp. This woman is an exceptional example of influencing millions of children and adults. She has moved the big valleys, mountains, politics, obstacles and hearts to teach all of us that it is a privilege to be on this earth [and] to help one another—however small or broken.

ASHLEY LEMIEUX, Founder/CEO of The Shine Project

TWITTER: @TheShineProject

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A WOMAN WHO MOVES THE VALLEY?

Thinking about how The Shine Project all started from my two-bedroom condo a few years ago to where we are now and being recognized as someone whose work is moving the Valley is very humbling and exciting for me. It means that hard work pays off, the underdog can win, and that people are looking to belong to something that's bigger than themselves.

HOW DID THE SHINE PROJECT COME TO BE?

My senior year of college I was interning at an inner-city high school in Phoenix. I met so many amazing students who didn't know that they had potential to receive a higher education and break the cycle of poverty and low expectations, and I knew that I had to do something about it. I started a nonprofit to help send them to college, and then a year later created a business where we employ the students we give scholarships to to make jewelry so they learn business skills and work ethic that prepares them to be successful when they graduate.

WHAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS?

The driving force behind our success is that we do a lot more than just sell product. We stand beside a group of people who have been overlooked for years, tell them that they are capable and help them reach their potential. We invest our resources in creating leaders in people, and spend less time worrying about selling a piece of jewelry. Combining our jewelry with our love for people is what has allowed us to be successful.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME?

Fear of the unknown has been a very big obstacle for me to overcome these past few years. When both the future of your business and also your personal life is unknown, it creates a lot of anxiety and stress in ways that I didn't know ever existed. I have had to learn that I am the one in control of my business and life, and that just because someone else tells you something isn't possible, doesn't mean that it's true.

WHAT IS ONE WISH YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?

To open more Shine centers up across the country. We are scheduled to do so this coming year.

FACE OF FOOTHILLS: SEAN STAHLNECKER

For a guy whose catchphrase is “living in paradise.” Sean Stahlnecker might seem like he’s got it all. And he does; after all, he’s a 23-year-old male model with washboard abs who considers “living a healthy lifestyle” a hobby. What most don’t know about Stahlnecker, though, is after dedicating 17 years of his life to a dream that ended traumatically and tragically, it’d be hard to deny he deserves his current bliss.

It was in Montana where Stahlnecker blew out his shoulder and lost all chances of becoming a professional hockey player. He kissed his D1 and D3 college offers goodbye and came home to Arizona clueless of what his future would hold. “[Hockey] instilled in me hard work and tenacity. I learned a lot as a man and as part of a team,” he says. “I flew back home [and] was kind of lost.” It wasn’t until his sister brought him with her to an open call for the Ford/Robert Black Agency that he was discovered and his modeling career took off. Today, he has worked for companies like Dillard’s, Vemma, Antigua and more and says his injury was a blessing in disguise.

Traveling constantly between Los Angeles and his home in Peoria to model, Stahlnecker still makes time to study business management and marketing at Rio Salado College, and in five years wants to have booked a modeling campaign and opened his own beverage company. –T.S.

FACE OF FOOTHILLS: TAYLOR MULHOLLAND

Instagram: @TaylorMvlholland

Taylor Mulholland is unpredictable and hard to read—even for a 19-year-old—yet undeniably balanced. She endures 80 minutes of soggy hot yoga and can hike a mountain like nobody’s business, but she also lounges couch-potato-style watching “Saturday Night Live” marathons. She has graced the Phoenix Fashion Week runway draped in couture but will still walk her obese Australian Sheppard barefoot and ferment her own Kombucha. “It’s good for your gut health!” she says.

Mulholland is an avid self-love promoter and values the ability to say “no” when her mind and body want a break, but she’s also the type to persevere and accomplish her goals.

When she was rejected from her current modeling agency two years ago for improper measurements, it only took her two months to shape up and get signed. “I like being challenged,” she says. “I don’t like to prove people wrong, but I like to prove that I can do it.” Winning the Face of Foothills competition, she says, is just one more “confirmation [that] with perseverance, you can do it.”

While she knows she’s worked relentlessly to get where she is, she repeatedly thanks her family, God and her Christian faith for the support and guidance she has received. In the coming years, Mulholland plans to take that positivity into the acting world and book modeling gigs that allow her to travel. –Taylor Seely

I got my cheer team involved, and they voted for me, so it was really fun,” she says.

Hightower moved from Grand Junction, Colo., to Scottsdale almost two years ago. Along with cheerleading, she takes all honors and AP classes and is a member of service-oriented organizations, National Honor Society and Interact Club.

She also has a love of the pageant world and has been participating in pageants since childhood. She proudly represents the state as Miss Arizona Teen USA 2016. As a lover of community service, Hightower looks forward to the volunteer opportunities this new title will give her.

As for her future career plans, Hightower thinks it would be fun to take a year off after graduating high school to pursue modeling full-time overseas. Wright modeled as a small child but took a break from it for a few years. She got back into it as an 8-year-old after walking in a runway show and has loved it since. “I like the runway, and I like being in front of the camera.”

Wright’s family and friends played a huge role in the voting process for Face of Foothills. “I had a lot of help, and I’m really grateful for that,” Wright says. Now that the voting is over, she is looking forward to getting to know the other winners.

“Modeling would definitely be a fun thing to do as a career,” she says. But Wright has some other ideas for the future, too. “I do volleyball, I do violin, I have a lot of hobbies and things like that could be fun to do, too,” she says.  During his time in office, the Bertelsmann Award honored Phoenix as the “Best Run City in the World.” It came partly based in because of Johnson’s efforts to help the city transition to a self-insurance model. Now, former Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson (1990-1994) has been working on finding affordable solutions for business and people when it comes to cutting unnecessary healthcare costs.

Johnson ran for city council when he was 23-years-old. He said that he knocked on eighty thousand doors, and only stopped knocking when he won the city council seat. Johnson believes in disrupting the status quo and is very heavily involved in political reform around the state and the country.

As a co-founder of Redirect Health, Johnson works to provide healthcare solutions with a team of doctors, physicians and other experts in the medical field while offering companies alternatives to the high-cost insurance plans most use.

Redirect Health provides affordable healthcare services that comply with the Affordable Care Act and helps reduce extraneous administrations costs by finding cost-efficient solutions to address healthcare needs. Customers are seeing a dramatic reduction in their premium plan with Redirect Health, according to Johnson.

Plans cost $86 per member and offer different services such as a twenty-four hour a day phone service that helps identify the health problems and offers care and guidance to people when they are sick or injured. It is important to note that Redirect Health does not provide health insurance, and it is not an insurance company.

With this new venture, former Phoenix Mayor Johnson is working closely with experts in the medical field to help provide health care solutions to businesses and help them reduce costs.

Johnson said, “change the world, think the unthinkable and have a blast.”

Jason Carr is a 27-year-old personal trainer at Urban Garage Gym who left his law career to pursue his dreams of becoming a notorious fitness entrepreneur first in the valley, and then around the country. Learn more about Carr's passion for fitness and how it motivates him to succeed in the fitness world.

Story By: Hector Salas Almeida

After a long shift working at a local Applebee's, Jason Carr was rushed to the hospital and was cut open by a surgeon who went in and untangled his large and small intestine, rearranged his organs. The surgeon removed a dead piece of colon and saw his organs revitalize, something that was rare and unheard of in the medical community. The doctors attributed this medical miracle to the remarkable shape Carr had maintained after years and years of weight training, diet and consistent exercise. Ten years later, Carr continues to push himself six days a week for two hours in the weight room, seeking results that will help him maintain an impermeable physic.

Carr decided that his first step in the fitness world was to become a fitness trainer, where he could measure the level of impact he could potentially have on a small clientele. He began working as a personal trainer in December of 2014 at Urban Garage Gym. Located in Scottsdale, the gym is tailored towards people who are looking for a hands on, one-on-one, intimate setting between trainee and trainer. Carr works closely with people who are looking to get into better shape, with people who are looking to compete in local and national physique competitions as well as the average person who is new to the fitness world and wants to get started on improving their physical health.

While working on generating a following on social media, Carr films daily workouts and takes pictures of him at the gym doing what he does best. He uses popular hashtags to help generate traffic to his Instagram and to his YouTube Channel where we hopes to widen his reach and increase the level of impact he has on other who are interested in fitness either locally, nationally or globally.

His love and passion for fitness transcends the physical aspects of the trade. Carr said that physical fitness is a manifestation of his mental state, his emotional state and his spiritual state. His passion is fitness; he hopes to be successful in sharing his passion with others and hopes it impacts others in a way that surpasses his mortal existence.

Are You Ready For Some Football? Co-Chair of the AOC, Brad Wright

CFBplayoff1

On Jan. 11, the Arizona Organizing Committee (AOC) welcomes the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship to Glendale. Brad Wright, co-chair of the AOC, discusses how the highly anticipated four-day celebration will cater to everyone from families to foodies to music lovers as much as it will appeal to sports fans.

AFM: You traveled to Texas for last year’s game. What did you learn there?

BW: A lot! Given that the College Football Playoff format is so new (last year was the inaugural national championship), there was quite a bit for us to learn. First and foremost, this is much more than one game. It’s a four-day celebration of college football with a wide variety of events and activities for fans and the community to enjoy. The size and scope of the College Football Playoff National Championship is truly impressive. Last year more than 33 million people tuned in to watch the national championship. It is certainly on par with that of other mega events Arizona has successfully hosted but with a uniquely collegiate atmosphere.

AFM: Did you take away any tips after witnessing the Super Bowl events earlier this year?

BW: We did. We’re in a unique position to be able to take what we learned in Dallas and what we learned from this last year’s Super Bowl and apply that to hosting the 2016 national championship.

We have worked very closely with the Super Bowl Host Committee to understand what worked best for them, as well as what could be improved. The community might notice some similarities between the two events, like our Championship Campus presented by Ak- Chin Indian Community in Downtown Phoenix, but there will be some very noticeable differences as well because this is collegiate football and a different fan base. If you were able to take part in this last Super Bowl, you know how exciting it was to be in the Valley— it was electric. That feeling is something that we hope to capture again and provide for the community.

AFM: How will the game and surrounding events differ than years before?

BW: Hosting college football championships is nothing new for Arizona. As many sports fans know, we’ve hosted more than any other state in the last 30 years. This year will be our eighth, the first under the new College Football Playoff format, and it will definitely be different. The previous BCS format (that many Arizonans are used to) was limited to one day of festivities. The College Football Playoff format is a four-day celebration of college football for the entire community. The community can look forward to Playoff Fan Central, a multi-day fan festival; Playoff Playlist Live!, a free outdoor music series; and Taste of the Championship, a culinary event, to name a few. All of those events will be taking place in the Championship Campus presented by Ak-Chin Indian Community in Downtown Phoenix starting on Jan. 8. We’ll also be hosting a Championship Tailgate before the national championship game in Glendale Jan. 11.

AFM: What impact do you hope for the championship game and events to have on the Valley?

BW: A couple of things. I hope that we host an outstanding national championship and that it is an event that the entire community can be proud of for years to come. I also hope that we are able to drive significant, long-term economic impact and development for the entire state. We’re not just in this for one game or one event; we’re in this for many, and we are working hard to showcase everything that makes Arizona a great place to live, do business and recreate in order to encourage travelers and business owners to be part of our community.

AFM: Which event are you most looking forward to?

BW: With all of the events, it’s hard to pick just one. I’m a football fan at heart, so I’m really looking forward to the national championship game no matter which teams are playing. One thing I know for sure is that it will be a fun- lled weekend, and we hope the community will come out and join us.

The HALL-FITCH Family

Jennifer Hall-Fitch and Stephen Fitch | Children: Jackson: 4 1⁄2; Isabella: 2 1⁄2

Christmas is everything to this tight-knit family. With much more to celebrate than just the holiday, including a family birthday and wedding anniversary, there’s quite a lot of hustle and bustle. However, one tradition never changes. “It’s a tradition I have carried over to doing with my own children. Each year we read, The Night Before Christmas, which gets the magic stirring in their heads,” says Jennifer Hall-Fitch. The founder and designer of luxury children’s brand, Henny & Coco, uses that magic that she sees in her children as inspiration for her brand. “They inspire me and a lot of what I do, how I can dress them, and how I envision things based on their personalities.” And this year, the passionate family of four will be starting a new tradition: going up north and picking out their own real Christmas tree to continue the magic around their rich and growing traditions.

FAVORITE HOLIDAY MOVIE: Isabella: “The puppy one...puppy one. The puppy one is my favorite!”

TREAT: Jennifer: Blueberry pie and Christmas cookies; Stephen: Blueberry/cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream; Jackson: “Actually, I like broccoli! Actually, what it is called that we just baked? A pie!”

CAROL: Jackson: “I like the ‘Jingle Bell’ song!”

The TAYLOR Family

Karrin Taylor | Children: Alexandra: 22; Elizabeth: 19 (not pictured, away at school); William: 15; Olivia: 11

With long established roots in Arizona, one of Executive Vice President of DMB Associates Karrin Taylor’s fondest holiday memories was opening presents in the wee hours of Christmas morning after going to midnight mass and returning home to find that Santa had magically already trickled gifts under the tree. Going to Christmas Eve mass is also a tradition that she has held with her own children, but she’s added her own sweet spin to the tradition: pecan pie. For the Taylors, the holiday season does not begin without a full house of family and their traditional passed-down, famous pecan pie recipe.

FAVORITE FAMILY TRADITION: Karrin: “Getting to make our pecan pie with all of the cousins around”; Alex: “When all the family comes together between Thanksgiving and New Year’s”; Olivia: “Probably all of the baking, the cookies and pecan pie”; Elizabeth: “Making pecan pie”; William: “Spending time with my family”

TREAT: Karrin: Pecan pie, cookies and candies; Alex: Gingersnaps; Olivia: Pecan pie; Elizabeth: Mashed potatoes; William: Chocolate chip cookies MOVIE: Karrin: “Miracle on 34th Street,” “It’s a Beautiful Life” and “Elf”; Alex and William: “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”; Olivia: “Elf”; Elizabeth: “It’s a Wonderful Life”

CAROL: Karrin and William: “Silent Night”; Alex and Elizabeth: “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”; Olivia: “Deck the Halls”

ACTIVITY: Karrin: “Cooking and eating with family”; Alex: “Waking up on Christmas morning and eating breakfast”; Olivia: “I like to wake up on Christmas morning and make pecan pie”

The KEPPEL Family

Scott and Melissa Keppel | Children: Gavin: 13; Alex: 11; Gabe: 8

Having a dad who’s the owner of Scott’s Training Systems and fitness director of Fit Life 120 and a mom who has defeated cancer twice, this family is one force to be reckoned with. Keeping holiday traditions as strong as their family’s bond, Scott Keppel says their family is “blessed.” The Keppels incorporate their own gym with the holiday spirit. “Every year we participate in John Jay and Rich’s Christmas Wish program,” Scott says. The family and their gym community— their second family—collect gifts to donate that the gym incentivizes. This is one way that Scott and Melissa teach their three children, Gavin, Alex and Gabe, about the true reason for the season: giving.

FAVORITE FAMILY TRADITION: Scott: “Getting each kid an ornament symbolic of them each year”

MOVIE: “Elf”

TREAT: Gabe: Candy canes and peanut butter cookies; Melissa: Assorted tray of desserts from AJ’s; Gavin: Candy canes; Scott and Alex: Making magic cookie bars

CAROL: Gabe and Gavin: “Jingle Bells”; Melissa: “O Holy Night (O Night Divine)”; Alex: “Let it Snow”

The CARDINI Family

Michelle and Joe Cardini | Children: Amanda: 21; Joseph: 18; Nina: 14

Community makes up the spirit of the holidays for the Cardini family. What prompts their annual Christmas Eve party and new traditions are the fondest of childhood memories. “I loved my mother’s ‘Christmas Eve in Connecticut’ parties that she would throw. It was a giant open house with a big bowl of eggnog,” says Michelle Cardini. The co- founder of MASK (Mothers Awareness on School-age Kids) knows the importance of a strong community for youth. This same atmosphere from her memories is one that she now recreates for her children and their school friends during the Christmas season, inviting her children’s high school and college pals so that they have a place to celebrate along with their family. And, what’s now included? An entire hot chocolate bar filled with treats.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS CAROL: Michelle: “All I Want for Christmas is You”; Amanda: "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” [“The Christmas Song”]; Nina: “Santa Baby”

TREAT: Michelle: Peanut butter chocolate balls; Amanda: Peppermint bark; Joseph: Gram’s Christmas tree cookies; Nina: Hot chocolate

TRADITION: Amanda: “Being home with loved ones”; Nina: “Our Christmas Eve party”; Joseph: “Going to pick out a live Christmas tree”

On the Rise: 5 Phoenix Open Golfers to Know

Meet five up-and-coming PGA Tour talents (most are celebrating their rookie year!) who you’ll see take the course at this month’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Andrew Loupe

Andrew-Loupe-Up-and-coming-golfer

How did you get your start in the game? My parents. Early on, I showed some athleticism, and they put a plastic club in my hand. I would whack a plastic ball around the house. As I grew older, I would use my father’s cut-down clubs, and he would take me out to play. Those are my earliest memories, being 5-years-old.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has the reputation for being one of the more fun stops. What are you most looking forward to? I played it last year. I Monday qualified. I got bad food poisoning right before the tournament. I had a couple of IVs after the first round. But I think it is awesome. There are few tournaments that have massive crowds, and Phoenix is one of them. It is rowdy, and 16 is awesome. It is like playing in a stadium. The louder the better. I think is great.

What is your favorite course? I have to say Pebble Beach. It is so majestic. I don’t think I am the only one that would say Pebble. Monterey Country Club is also one of my favorites.

Who is your biggest mentor? Chuck Winstead; he was my college coach. I have known him for a long time. He has a very high golf IQ. He gives me great golf advice, as well as life advice. He is 20 years older than me; it is a perfect age gap. If I ever have a question, he is usually the first person I call.

Do you have any rituals prior to competing? It is getting out of control; I should tone it back a bit. I use a quarter every time, and I mark it on heads every time unless I have an eagle putt and then I will mark it on tails. Sometimes if I can’t buy one, I will start marking it on tails.

Off the course, where can we find you? I love to fish. I went the other day, and went out in the marsh in the Gulf of Mexico, south of New Orleans. That is probably my favorite thing to do, if I had several hours to do something. I love sports, especially basketball. I like going to sporting events. I like to play basketball, but I am conservative with ankles and knees.

What are your goals for 2016? I want to be a more consistent golfer. I want to win a golf tournament. I want my preparation to be more consistent. I want to learn from past experiences. I really want to see some improvement.

Harold Varner

Harold-Varner-III

Congrats on your rookie year! What is that like being on the PGA Tour? It is good. It is good. I am enjoying myself for sure.

How did you get your start in the game? My dad played golf. Being around him, he played every Sunday. I got a little hook to it, but he introduced me to the game.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has the reputation for being one of the more fun stops. What are you most looking forward to? Just playing in front of that many people going nuts. I think that is going to be pretty fun because I would be one of those people going nuts if I wasn’t playing golf.

What is your favorite course? Pebble Beach is right up there. I played there once. There are a lot of good ones; Quail Hallow is pretty good in Charlotte.

Who is your biggest mentor? My college coach. Also, my dad.

Do you have any rituals prior to games? None. Zero, actually.

Off the course, where can we find you? At the local bar, probably. Either that or on the golf course wherever I am at.

What are your goals for 2016? Just retaining my card, more than anything. I want to win.

Peter Malnati

Peter-Malnati-golfer-on-the-rise-az-foothills

How did you get your start in the game? I have a unique story. I was born in Indiana and moved to a very rural area of Tennessee when I was 13-months-old. One of our neighbors he was an old man—and he wouldn’t mind me saying that—and he got my dad into golf a bit. My dad is a great athlete. He was the first person who ever took me to a golf course. That was the first time I ever played. He convinced my dad to join a golf course. When I was 8-years-old, my parents joined the golf course and every day when my dad came home from work, we would go play nine holes. I owe it all my crazy neighbor, John.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has the reputation for being one of the more fun stops. What are you most looking forward to? I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to the stadium atmosphere on No. 16. I have never experienced anything quite like that. I always thought it was cool that—at baseball games, football—it was cool to be surrounded by thousands of fans and get out there playing a game. Golf is my job, my profession, but I feel like I am just playing a game. I am really excited about it. I am really excited about stepping on the tee at No. 16 for the first time—I don’t even care if I get booed.

What is your favorite course? I think Pebble Beach is the most special place. The setting, the scene. It is so special, and I enjoy the view there.

Who is your biggest mentor? As far as people who are playing, some people I have looked up to is Zach Johnson for the way he plays and the success he has had. I think he is really courageous. He uses the tools he has and uses them to the best of his ability. He plays to his strengths. That is something I admire; he doesn’t try to be anything he’s not. I wouldn’t call him a mentor, but I look up to him.

Do you have any rituals prior to games? Every golfer has some superstitions; we are all kind of a crazy bunch. I don’t really know of anything I do that is that is odd or eccentric, but I know we all have our little quirks.

Off the course, where can we find you? I’m actually at this point in my career when I just love to practice. It doesn’t wear me out. I spend most of my daylight hours at the course. When I am not golfing, I like doing just about anything with my wife, except shopping—I don’t like to shop. I like to explore new cities. That doesn’t give you much instruction if you’re looking for me because I don’t know where I’ll be.

What are your goals for 2016? I am motivated to win again and get an invitation to Augusta [for the Masters]. I have some really positive momentum, and it is a Ryder Cup year. It is a lofty goal of mine, but I want to be considered for the Ryder Cup.

Smylie Kaufman

Smylie-Kaufman-golfer-on-the-rise-az-foothills

Congrats on your rookie year! What is that like being on the PGA Tour? It is something I have always worked for. This is my dream come true. I have played some great tournaments this year. I am looking forward to developing as a golfer and achieving all the dreams that I want to.

How did you get your start in the game? Both of my parents played collegiate golf as Louisiana State University, where I played. I created a passion for it by myself, but I had parents that were a great influence.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has the reputation for being one of the more fun stops. What are you most looking forward to? The Phoenix Open is the one besides the Majors the one I am looking forward to this year. It is crazy, and I like atmospheres like that. It is going to be really cool. I have never played in front of that many people, especially people that are yelling at you sometimes. It will be a little different but a fun experience for me.

What is your favorite course? It really doesn’t matter to me. Golf is golf, but I do like Jack Nicklaus golf courses.

Who is your biggest mentor? My dad. I have a great team around me, but I think my dad is the one I can talk to and give me good advice.

Off the course, where can we find you? Probably in front of a TV, watching “SportsCenter.” Nothing too crazy. I do like to keep a basketball in my hand to dribble around the house, shoot into my little mini hoop.

What are your goals for 2016? I am going to try to win Rookie of the Year and to win a game on the PGA Tour wouldn’t hurt either.

Will Wilcox

Will-Wilcox-golfer-on-the-rise-az-foothills 15BAR1

How did you get your start in the game? My mom was a golfer—she was a teaching professional and probably could have played. I learned from her every day when I was younger. I wasn’t football size, so golf was a good fit.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has the reputation for being one of the more fun stops. What are you most looking forward to? Just the whole thing. It has been a bucket list tournament for every guy that plays. You have to earn your way there. Now that I have been able to do that, it is a dream come to play on the 16.

What is your favorite course? Pebble Beach is awesome. I like Spyglass. St. Andrew’s is the most fun.

Who is your biggest mentor? My mom taught me how to play. At this point, there are a few players I look [up to]. I just kind of look at how Tiger went about his golf. He worked really hard. The Tiger method of preparing to do your best is probably what I look up to more than anything.

What are your goals for 2016? To me, I will try to build on last year, keeping my card and keeping status on the tour. It was a lifelong goal, and I was able to do that. I had a good year in 2015. I like to hang around all year and have the chance to win.

Do you have any rituals prior to games? I take a fairly chilled approach to it. I shop up a little late. I am not rushing to get to my tee time. I warm up for 20, 25 minutes. I try not to over-analyze anything.

What does a warm up consist of for you? Do a little stretch in the hotel room. Get a nice meal in. Ten or 15 minutes of stretching and hitting balls for 15 or 20 minutes. Maybe a couple chips, a couple of puts.

Off the course, what do you love to do? I like the beach; I live in Jupiter, Fla. I am a beach-goer. I am on the water a lot. I spend a lot of time in the Caribbean; I like the beach scene. It was always something I was drawn to.

How to be UNSTOPPABLE in 2016 with Best-Selling Author and Motivational Speaker, Lisa Nichols

Lisa-Nichols-tips-to-be-unstoppable-in-2016“So many people hold their future hostage to their pasts,” Lisa Nichols says on the phone a week before she’s set to take the stage with Tony Robbins and others at the Unstoppable in 2016 motivational speaking tour at Comerica Theatre.  “The goal is for this [conference] to be the catalyst for long-term change.”

In 1994, Nichols couldn’t afford Pampers for her son and was kept afloat by public assistance and food stamps. Realizing she had hit rock bottom, Nichols sought solutions by reading about the mindsets of successful people and attending inspirational speaking conferences.

“When you get a bunch of like-minded people in a room and you set them on fire, people start running at a pace they’ve never run at before,” she says. “I went to a conference in 1997 that changed my life… it shifted my thinking and opened up possibilities I hadn’t seen before; I am who I am today because I went to that conference…”

Nichols has now authored six award-winning books, and her newest seventh, “ABUNDANCE NOW,” is a follow-up to her New York Times bestseller, “No Matter What.” She also founded, “Motivating the Masses, Inc.,” a multi-million dollar publicly traded company. At the conference, she says she wants to “ignite” the audience and inspire within them a positive and lasting transformation.

Until then, though, she’s dishing out some of her best tips to becoming improved, upgraded, and UNSTOPPABLE with the readers of AZFoothills.com.

  1. Abundance is for everyone – Abundance…is not about focusing on possessions and money. Wealth is about money and possessions. True abundance is a 360 experience that will impact four areas of your life; (it’s about) the quality of your relationships, the quality of your health, the depth in connection of your spirituality, and finally, your finances. What’s your contribution to the planet? What do you need your finances to do in terms of furthering humanity?
  2. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to initiate change – You don’t have to be in a rut to change. Change is growth. Growth is transformation. I’m not in a rut right now, but I can’t wait for my life to transform. We’re often pain-based motivators. What I’m excited about is the opportunity for people to no longer be pain-based motivators and be possibility-based motivators. (Rather than) trying to manage pain, come at it from a different angle; do it because you want to create more joy in life.
  3. You have to want change – I think so many of us try inspire people to change when they don’t want to change, and our job is to respect that if they don’t want to change, they don’t want to change.
  4. If you want change, start with your mindset and education – If you do want to change, the first thing to do is to change your mindset. To change your mindset, you have to learn something new. Go somewhere to learn something extra. Unstoppable…is designed to open doors, and it’s designed to make you think really differently. It’s designed to begin to shift your mindset. Wherever your mindset goes, your lifestyle has to follow.
  5. Get specific about your goals - Limited belief systems lead to a limited life; ambiguous beliefs and goals lead to ambiguous results. ‘Someday!’ we say. ‘One day!’ Well, can you circle someday on the calendar? If you can’t…it doesn’t exist. Become crystal clear about what you want. A lot of times people create these crazy, macro goals but they don’t create micro wins to get to the macro goals. I tell people, when you set a by when date, don’t just set a by when date. Pick the date on the calendar, and not only the date on the calendar, pick the time of the day on the day and what time zone that’s in.  How clear is that! How powerful is that? (Then, combine) clarity along with action.
  6. Avoid spending dollar time on penny tasks – Only spend your time on the highest revenue-generating activities that you should be doing.
  7. Take responsibility – Take responsibility for your thoughts and your actions in 2016, but more importantly, take responsibility for your reactions.
  8. Plan based on information, not emotion – When you’re making decisions, do it based on knowledge, not longing, and decide to do something or be something because you’ve done your homework, and it makes good sense, versus it just makes you feel good. Emotions should be our turbo boost, but it shouldn’t be our barometer to make decision on. It should be the thing that accelerates and adds meaning to our decisions that we’ve made based on data.
  9. Give yourself permission to fail, but fail forward.

@RACHITKUMARMD

@LADYBOSSLUXURY

@SHANNONSTYLIST

Country Superstar Terri Clark Talks Music with AFM

by Kelly Potts

Instagram: @sean_stahlnecker

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED: Being silly and weird and a giant hippie. Being gentle and caring to the environment. Fun and quirky.

ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF: Crazy. Everyone calls me crazy and, honestly, I accept it.

TEEN FACE OF FOOTHILLS: TRISTANY HIGHTOWER

Instagram: @Tristany_Hightower

Since she was a little girl, Tristany Hightower, 16, the 2016 Teen Face of Foothills winner, has enjoyed the fast-paced world of modeling. When Hightower entered into the Face of Foothills contest, she recruited help on social media to get votes. “We just shared it all over social media...continually posting on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

For right now, Hightower is enjoying modeling and is excited to be the Teen Face of Foothills winner. “I still can’t believe I won. I’m just so excited for all the opportunities it’s going to bring,” she says. –A.Z.

JUNIOR FACE OF FOOTHILLS: ELISE WRIGHT

Instagram: @Ekwright927

Gilbert native, Elise Wright, 12, was beyond excited to find out she was the 2016 Junior Face of Foothills winner. “I didn’t really think I was going to win...It was kind of a surprise to me because there’s so many other chances of other people that could’ve won,” she says.

She also thinks pursuing a career in photography would be fun. –Abby Zufelt

James McKinney, owner of Big Dawg Promotions, came up with the idea for his company directly from his own struggles as a small-business owner. So he developed Big Dawg Promotions to help small-business owners achieve advertising goals without having to chase leads themselves or create financial distress.

Big Dawg Productions offers flyers, magnets, calendars and more to help spread the word about its clients. And best of all, the process is easy and the prices can't be beat.
